Back in the Glory Days of Don Janse, and our excursions to Winnepeg, Manitoba and of course to the booming metropolis of Honeyoe Falls, New York. It was our Idlers trip to Washington, DC, and our performance for the Presidential Prayer Breakfast (back when Tricky Dick was the Pres, and "Baldy" Bender was the Commandant) that made the "haircuts optional" period at USCGA come to an abrupt end. Ah, the memories (Yes, Bob, some of us still do have the capability to remember some things)!
OK, I was a 2nd Tenor then, and played the String Bass as we sang (although I was not in the New London Trio). Today I still sing Tenor, in my church choir. My all-time favorite Idlers songs? "The First Time I Ever" and "Where It's At," both written by the Master himself, Don Janse. I still find myself singing those songs to myself from time to time, even 25 years after last performing them with the Idlers. Do the Idlers of today perform either of those songs?

So far as information to add me to the directory, I am a '77 graduate, got out of the Guard in 1988 and am now run my own law firm: The Byrum Law Offices, P.C. in Alexandria, VA. Visited Prof. and Helen Janse during October and my 20-year reunion. Had a great time. I hope Prof. Janse is a planned inclusion in the reunion celebration in April. Back at Dear Old CGA, I sang and played the guitar and 5-string banjo for the Idlers for my entire 4-year tenure. My nickname was "Banjo" or "Fingers"; and although I don't play every day, as I did then, I still find the time to pick a few tunes from time to time. Back then, Newton was the assistant and ran the Glee Club - congrats on your promotion. Hope to make the reunion - the Griz was my favorite hangout; I often brought my banjo and joined in with the entertainment. Once we (The Idlers) brought an English/Irish chanty singer to the Griz, set up sound stuff, and made some cuts for the 1976 album. I had a banjo solo on that album, but it got cut off in final production (even though my name still appears on the label as the banjo soloist). Oh well - my 15 minutes of fame on the cutting-room floor. I'd like to hear from old compadre's. Later.

I just noticed this web site tonight, looks like my old Idler buds Jim, Mark, and Wade did so too! Lots of great memories doing the Idler thing -- it rounded out the whole Academy experience. My most memorable gig was that one in DC, after which we were told that Admiral Bender came unglued when he saw our haircuts. My favorite song was actually a production -- our all-male version of "The Mikado" (might play well here in San Francisco now!)

The "Good Times Are Not Over" album was done in '68, not '62. I mean, those guys were pretty good, but Don Janse was back in '67 and we recorded "Good Times . . ." in the CGA Chapel -- several times!!! The other pages look great, too, except I guess I missed how to order some of the memorabilia. Guess I'll go back and look again. Look for you in April. Later. bh

The CG Band recording engineer is online, and all the performance sites are locked in (Gris, Leamy). Doc Janse got his invitation and more letters are going out to Bill Winterer and Douglas Paul (former and current owners of the Gris). Nothing but excitement! I may need help stuffing envelopes...

I've been to a few; but this was THE BEST! For nyone from the 60's, let me know if you remember other members of '63 who may have been with us. Mike Masters was one'; but I think he left USCGA early. Bill Poteat may have been with us too. Names from the past! According to my dear wife, those in the audience had at least as good a time as those of us on the stage! See you next time?

It was terrific for him to have the opportunity to see so many former Idlers. Also, he could not say enough about Ed Beale and all he did to make the reunion possible and such a success. I agreed except for the lack of lemons.

While cleaning out my late grandmother's house, I found a copy of the Bicentennial/CGA Centennial album, on which are a number of names previoulsy missing. In order (staring with the 1st tenors, who by now have gown up and gone through puberty): Paul Berry ('78, I believe), Larry Eppler ('75), Larry Hall ('75), Kim Wilhelm ('76); 2d Tenors John "Mad Dog" Byczek ('75), Marc Cruder ('79), Rich "Cad" Cusson ('78), Albert "Bucky" Horsmon ('76), Gene Gabrell (not sure any more -- '79 or '80?), Paul Neiswander ('76); Bari's Gary Blore ('75), Pat Clancy ('76), Rob Kutz (the outstanding Class of '77), Bill Nash ('76), Tom Nichols ('75 -- NLT), Mike O'Neill (not sure at this late date -- '78?), Ty Waterman ("75 -- NLT), Basses Dave Kuzanek ('76), Omar "Ted" Lamoe ('77 -- now with a different name), John Pillsbury ('75), Jeff "Posty" Poston (another distinguished member of '77), Mark Schultz ('75), Bob Slye ('76); and the best instrumentalists ever to accompany the Idlers, Mark "Fingers" Byrum ('77 -- Guitar, banjo, NLT), Wade "WAM" Mitchell ('77 -- Bass, Guitar, Tuba (for those of you who remember "My Gal's A Corker", NLT), Gene Gabrell (Guitar), Mike O'Neill (Guitar). Listed at the time as understudies wre Greg Walters, Phil Johnson, Rod Raines, Everett "Rusty" Rollins, Terry Walsh and Mike Welter. May want to add those in.
By the way, the home page still does not have any access to information about us Instrumentalists. We gave not only depth and comic relief, but drank more than any other section, too. Later. WAM
